How should an O-ring be measured?
Measure the inside diameter and the round cross-section without stretching the ring. Use clean callipers and take several readings because an old ring may be flattened or swollen. If possible, measure the groove as well and state the applicable ISO 3601 or AS568 size reference.
When is a back-up ring needed?
A back-up ring supports a softer O-ring beside a clearance gap. It is considered where pressure, gap size, temperature or material softness could let the elastomer extrude. Groove width and pressure direction determine whether one or two supporting rings are appropriate.
How do I select a gasket material?
Identify the fluid, temperature, joint movement, flange condition and cleaning method first. Rubber grades suit many water, oil and general service joints, while PTFE is often selected for chemical resistance. Confirm that the chosen material meets any hygiene or process requirements for the application.
