How to measure a hydraulic seal for replacement

A worn seal can distort, shrink or swell, so the groove is often more reliable than the old part. Measure clean hardware with callipers, record the rod or bore, groove diameter and groove width, and photograph the profile. Then add the fluid, pressure, temperature and movement.

What is the correct measuring sequence?

  1. Clean the seal, groove and mating hardware without damaging an edge.
  2. Identify whether the seal works on a rod, piston, face or rotating shaft.
  3. Measure the nominal rod diameter d or cylinder bore D.
  4. Measure the groove bottom diameter and groove width L at several points.
  5. Measure the old seal cross-section without stretching it, then compare it with the groove.
  6. Record the lip direction, support rings, energisers and any venting features.
  7. Add fluid, pressure, temperature, speed and a clear cross-section photograph.

Frequently asked questions

Should I measure the old seal or the groove?

Measure both when possible, but prioritise clean metal groove dimensions because a used elastomer seal can be permanently deformed.

How precise should the measurements be?

Use a suitable calliper or micrometer and record millimetres consistently. The necessary tolerance depends on the profile and equipment, so do not round a measured value to a preferred nominal size without checking.

What if the cylinder cannot be dismantled?

Send the machine and cylinder references, readable seal markings, assembly drawings and clear photographs. A dimensional match may still require dismantling before a final selection is safe.

Need help matching a part?

Send the marking, dimensions, application and a clear photograph.
